Course Outline

In GCSE Geography, the course focuses on geographical issues relevant to your generation, and you will have the opportunity to consider different views on a variety of geographical issues.

During the course, you will investigate natural hazards such as earthquakes, volcanoes and tropical storms and study rainforests and eco systems. You will explore the characteristics of hot deserts and learn about rivers and coastal features in the UK. You will also study population growth and change, look at energy sources and conservation and investigate world food supply. Students will also take part in two fieldwork trips that will form the basis of Unit 3.

A typical lesson might involve...

  • Independent research
  • Regular opportunities for group work & class discussions
  • Enquiries about relevant issues
  • Use of textbooks, iPads, digimaps and OS maps
  • Students will complete GCSE questions and homework is set weekly

How will I be assessed?

The course is divided into 3 units

• Unit 1: Living With the Physical Environment – Worth 35% of final grade (90-minute examination)

• Unit 2: Challenges in the Human Environment – Worth 35% of final grade (90-minute examination)

• Unit 3: Geographical applications – Worth 35% of final grade (75-minute examination) developments in technology have led to more inclusive and flexible working environments and how regulation and ethical and security concerns influence how organisations operate

What qualifications will I achieve and what could I do afterwards?

You will achieve a GCSE in Geography.

A GCSE in Geography could give you access to college course such as A-level Geography, Environmental Science, Sociology, Psychology and Public Services.
